The Impact Of Geothermal Development

On Stockraising Homestead Landowners

Surface use and compensation conflicts have IlI 111
developed at the Geysers in California between
owners of surface lands acquired under the
Stockraising Homestead Act of 1916 and 114924
geothermal lessees with the right to develop
the mineral interests reserved to the Federal
Government.

Such land comprises only a small portion of
the total acreage at the Geysers and is not
likely to significantly affect overall geothermal
development in that area. Resolution of con-
flicts could set a precedent and affect future
geothermal development as well as other min-
eral development elsewhere.

Several recommendations are made to the
Secretary of the Interior concerning the prob-
lems identified.
