The Sudden Infant Death

Syndrome Program Helps Families

But Needs Improvement

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is the sudden
and unexpected death of an apparently healthy
infant which cannot be explained by a thor-
ough medical examination. The Department
of Health and Human Services' Sudden Infant
Death Syndrome Information and Counseling
program is helping families deal with the death
of their infants. However, grantees have not
fully met the program's objectives because of
(1) the lack of full cooperation from other
organizations, (2) the lack of sufficient guid-
ance from the Department, and (3) the Depart-
ment's failure to enforce program require-
ments. The Department also needs to improve
its grant and contract award and management
procedures.

To help overcome obstacles impeding the ex-
tension of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in-
formation and counseling services nationwide,
GAO recommends that the Congress consol-
idate this program with the Maternal and Child
Health program.
