Impact Of Work Cutbacks On Northeast

Corridor Improvement Project

Work planned under the Northeast Cor-
ridor Improvement Project, to improve
high-speed rail passenger service be-
tween Boston and Washington, has been
cut I6ack substantially to stay within the
proje.t's budget--now $2.5 billion. Ac-
cord'rg to project officials, reductions in
plan ed work from January 1 979 to the
present will likely reduce ontime reliabil-
ity; passenger comfort; and passenger,
crew member, and public safety; and in-
crease Amtrak maintenance costs.
Thes, officials believe that additional
work cutbacks will probably be
nece 9sary.
This s an interim report on a forthcoming
broai ler view of the Northeast Corridor
Impr)vement Project. A previous report
(CEE-79-38, Mar. 29, 1979) covered
changes in the project's planned work up
to arid including January 1979.
