Computerized Hospital Medical Information

Systems Need Further Evaluation To Ensure

Benefits From Huge Investments

Widepread use of computerized hospital med-
ical information systems within the next 5 to
10 y.,ars could represent investments totaling
billio ns of dollars.

The National Center for Health Services Re-
sear(h in the Department of Health and Human
Serv ces is responsible, among other things, for 113788
supporting research, demonstration, and eval-
uation of these systems. So far, the Center has
not eveloped sufficient information on the
imp ct of these systems on hospital costs and
pati( nts. According to Center officials, a lack
of f nds prevents further evaluation.

The Department's Bureau of Health Planning
and he Center are developing a workbook with
added guidance to help health systems agencies
eval ate hospital requests to acquire these med-
ical nformation systems.

The Center should ensure that future funding
allo ations are provided for more evaluations.
The Bureau should see that appropriate guid-
anc is issued on a timely basis.
