The ObjectiVes Of The Cancer Control

Program And The National Cancer Institute's

Administration Of Program Contracts

The cancer control program was established
by the National Cancer Act of 1971 to rapidly
transfer cancer advances from the research
setting to general medical use. In implementing
the program, the Institute conducts a wide
range of activities, such as disseminating in-
formation, gathering statistics, and conduct-
ing education programs.

The Institute administers the program through
grants, contracts, and interagency agreements
awarded to State and local health agencies,
medical centers, and others.

The Institute's administration of the award
of and work under five cancer control con-
tracts was weak. As a result, three of the com-
pleted contracts GAO reviewed fell short of
their objectives.
