Management And Inventory Control Of Small Arms Because of their cost, vital role in defense missions, and vulnerability to theft, mili- tary small arms, such as the M2 machine gun, require careful management and control. GAO found that the Army has not established nor maintained accurate inventory informa- tion needed to effectively manage its M2 machine gun program. As a result, the Army cannot determine whether decisions on pro- curement, distribution, or disposal of M2 s are appropriate. To illustrate, after GAO identi- fied that M2 s were available in the Army as well as in the Navy and Air Force inventories of which the Army was unaware, the Army canceled a planned $10.2 million purchase of M2s. The shortcomings GAO found in the M2 pro- gram may also exist in Army systems for managing other small arms.
