OF THE UNITED STATES

Closer Controls And Better Data Could

Improve Antitrust Enforcement

The Department of Justice's Antitrust Divi-
sion and the Federal Trade Commission en-
force Federal antitrust laws aimed at pre-
venting anticompetitive business practices
and market structures. GAO's review of 294
antitrust investigations showed that the two
agencies can improve their operations by

     --more closely monitoring enforcement
     direction;

     --evaluating the effectiveness of enforce-
     ment efforts;

     --providing closer management control
     over investigations; and

     --maximizing the use of available sup-
     port services, such as professional econ-
     omists and investigative personnel.
