Food Price Inflation In The

United States And Other Countries

Although American consumers are concerned
about rapid food price increases, actually they
are spending less of their income on food than
in the past and more for other goods and serv-
ices, such as housing and transportation.

Compared to many other countries, U.S.
food prices are among the lowest. Americans,
on the average, spend less of their income on
food and pay lower prices than do many
foreign consumers. However, low-income
Americans can pay up to 40 percent of dis-
posable income for food.

Even though U.S. food prices are lower and
rising less rapidly than prices in many other
countries, opportunities to improve the U.S.
food production system and stabilize food
costs should be sought.
