Aircraft Delays At Major

U.S. Airports Can Be Reduced

In 1977, aircraft delays cost U S airlines
over $800 million, detained the traveling
public over 60 million hours, and caused the
airlines to use an additional 700 million gal
Ions of fuel, over 8 percent of their total
consumption

Generally, aircraft delays result from exces-
sive air traffic and bad weather Many major
U S airports have peak, congested periods
when air traffic exceeds runway capacity and
aircraft delays occur

To reduce delays at major airports, the Con
gress and Secretary of Transportation should
take actions to shift traffic from peak to off
peak periods or to other airports
