Nuclear Power Costs And Subsidies








On October 23, 1978. Senator John Melcher
asked GAO to identify, to the extent possible,
the full cost of nuclear power. Such a cost
mainly includes not only industry's costs, but
also those borne by the Fedeial Government
u piumoti u, regulate the nuclear power in
dustry.

GAO found that the average commercial cost
of eiectricity generated by nuclear power
plants in the United States d!uring 1978 was
reported to be about 1.5 cents per kilowatt.

Major Federal nuclear-related costs and sub
sidies for research and development, uranium
enrichment, uranium exploration, and regula
tion tctaled  athout $1.7  billion  during  fiscal
year 1978, an increase of about S274 million
from fiscal year 1977. These costs. based on
assumptions descr tbed in the report, were
equal to 0.62 cents per kilowatt hour during
fiscal year 1978, and 0.57 cents during fiscal
year 1977. Other Federal contributions to the
