D.C. 30s RELEASED B-164031(2) R JANUARY 22, 1979 The Honorable George McGovern, Chairman Subcommittee on Nutrition oluOloD Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition,.S1.IV L and Forestry United States Senate Dear Mr. Chairman: Pursuant to your August 7, 1978, letter a d later discussions with your office, we reviewed the use of nutri- tional supplementation V in the treatment of cancer patients Specifically, we obtained information on (1) nutritional pros- lems of cancer patients, (2) nutritional supplementation ac- tivities at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, compared with those of three leading teaching hospitals, (3) the need for research to determine the importance of pro- viding nutritional supplementation to cancer patients, and (4) the need for training physicians and patients to increase their awareness of the importance of patients' nutritional status and to improve the skills of medical personnel in pro- viding nutritional supplementation. Medical personnel we contacted generally believe that some groups of cancer patients have serious nutritional deficiencies and that nutritional supplementation may be an \ important adjunct to their treatment. Some preliminary research results indicate that nutritional supplementation may have benefited certain cancer patients.
