Population Growth Problem

In Developing Countries:

Coordinated Assistance Essential

Rapid population growth in developing
countries impedes efforts to improve the
quality of life, Many governmental, inter-
national, and private and voluntary organ-
izations provide population assistance to
an ever. increasing number of countries.
Cumulative assistance could now total about
$2 billion; the United States alone provided
about $1.2 billion in the 196578 period.

Because of the complexity of the problem
and the many organizations involved,
systematic coordination of assistance is es-
sential to ensure that programs are as effi-
cient and effective as possible.

GAO recommends that the Agency for
International Development work with the
other major contributors and the develop-
ing countries to improve coordination, to
reach agreement on leadership, strategy,
and program responsibility, and to make
sure that all participants are adequately
informed of each other's activities.
