         By law, the Ccmptroller General conductz A program to
develop standard terms and classifications for Federal fiscal,
budgetary, and program-related information; to identify
.ongreQsiondl needs for such information; and to moni r
recurring reporting requirements of the Congress and
-ecoamendations for changes in these requirements.
Findings/conclusions: Progrp-s has been made in these areas over
the past year. In terms of standardizing information, GAO's
analyse- of budget conc.epts and practices have covered studies
of executive branch unexpended balances of tudget authority and
funding procedures and the recording of budget authoi.ty in
Federal programs. Other GAO ztandardization efforts have
included: continued development of an inventcry of Federal
programs and activities with associrted legislative
authorization and budget information, testiacmy before
congressional committees on pending oversight reform
legisletion, identifying and describing Federal regulatory
programs, efforts it implementation of a revised structure of
budget function categories, and work in developing standard data
codes. GAO has also provided lists of programs and activities
under each congressional compitteets jurisdictio,, along with
relevant authorization, budget, and related information. GAO's
data base for use in mcnitorDvq congressional reporting
requirements, responding to co-gressional inquiries, and
developing recommendations Las been updat;!d. In addition, the
executive branch took steps to improve its reporting of fiscal,
budgetary, and program-related informaticn and tc improve the
budqetcry process, (RRS)
