The Department of the Interior is the principal agency
of the Government responsible for managing mineral resources ana
has a ma4- role in formulating mineral policy. Within tke
Geoloqica Sourvey, the Computerized Fesources Intcrzaticr Bank
(CRIB) stores basic data on gecligy, sines, anid commodities and
retrieves the intormation for use in minera. resource analysis.
Findinqs/Conclusions: The CRIB is incourlete, inaccurate,
outdated, and lacks data and management support. A viable
information system is needed to help officials perfcru tke
Survey's most importaLnt minerals Fclicy advisory role--anlysis
of long-term mineral resoucce availatility. Recomsendations: To
increase the priority and high-level agency su[port fcr a
computerized resource and decision oriented information LanK,
the Secretary of the Interior should direct the Assistant
Secretary, Energy and Minerals, to clearly fcrouate written
rnineral resource information requirements of the CRIB Frcgram
for submission to the Geological SuLVe); cider that the RTIB
system design and information requirements he sade fully
compatible with the Bureau of Mine's Mineral Availabilitj System
for mineral reserves; and require the Director of the Geclcgical
Survey to formulate and put in placr a survey-wide Elan
provid±nq internal coordination and iLut tc CRIB from all
Geological. Survey mineral activities. The Eirector cf the
Geological Survey should make the Assistant Director, Erergy aind
Mineral Reources, responsible for develcting and coordinating
the implementation of an integrated Geological Survey-wide
Mineral Resources Program that will utilize a CRIB-like system
as the central and/or primary computerized minerals information
system. Various forms of support should also te created and
assigned to this task. (Author/S:)
