Summaries are provided of various studies ty GAG's
Enerqy and Minerals Divisicn to assist in the consideration of
the Department of Energy's (DOE's) proposed energy supply
initiatives. A report Jated February 2. 15918, noted that sore
information would be helpful to justify existing and future
fundinq levels in terms of the possitle contributions that so. r
enerqy can make. It -Iso pointed out that the benefits of solar
enerqy in terms of energy production are not clear. Three
reports dealt with actions to expedite the regulatory process:
the Nuclear Regulatory Commissionas managesent prccess for
evaluatinq nuclear poerplant designs and sites, the failure of
the Nuclear Regulatory commission to zeduce leadtimes in
buildinq nuclear poverplants, and delay. in the processing of
construction permit applications. In terms of reducing
institutional difficulties arising from development cf ew
enerqy supplies, a July 1977 report discussed the need for
additional Federal assistance for Rocky Mountain communities
that will be affected by energy resource development. A xeport
dated Auqust 24, 1976, concluded that synthetic fuels
production, while technically feasible, is not cost effective.
several reports have addressed various aspects of coal
production. Problems relevant t.o implementation of the
Radioactive Waste Management Act of 1977 have keen explcxed, and
a Septeuk r 1977 report noted that the DOE had not jet
