A . contract between the Energy Research and
Development dainistratior, now the Deartment of Energy (iOE),
and INS Fus ,r% Inc. (KOS) covered the setting up aud operation
of a new la- ' ' target experiments, target design and
fabrication, nid laser fusion theory. A 1977 ccntract provided
for correct ,; rroblems with the laser system and further work
in the areas o. the 1976 contract. Es has fully complied with
the requirements of both the 1976 and 1977 contracts and has
made several unique contributions in the area of taxget
falrication. Under the 1976 contract, It produced large-diameter
thin-vall qlass, plastic, ard multilay4r target shells and
developed new techniques which are requirevents for improving
laser fusion efficiency an4/or eventually coamurcially 'iferating
laser fusion reactors. DOE stated that the 1976 target bork
exceeded contract requirements and shove,1 considerable
innovation. DOE characterized work undcr the 1977 contract
objectives as being satisfactory and deucustrating high
competerce in the art of targt fabrication. 2he only major
instance of inadequate performance vas KNS' failure to achieve
predicted laser power during the 1976 ctntact. KbZ has had a
significant role in developing laser fusion energy vnd say be
capab'-e of making significant contributicns in the tuture. (HTW)
