         HIRE (Help through industry Retraining and Employment
Program) usa announced by tke Secretary of Labor is January 1977
as a proqram primarily to assist disabled weterans and
Vietnam-era veterans obtain employment. E3 has two segments: a
reimbursable activity for qualifying firms that wish to be
compensated for extraordinary training costs iscarxed in
traininq eligible persons and a voleutery activity fto fis
that are willing to empily eligible individuals without
reimbursement. rindings/Concluuions: in of Deceobet 2. 1977,
Department of Labor officials had little inforsatior. abuvft the
number of persons hired under the reimbursable program. The
first report shoued that 136 persons had been placed in the
reimbursable prograa as of October 31. 1977; the second report
showed 285 placements as of Uovember Z   1977. The National
Alliance of BDusinesmen naintains information on the pledges
received for the voluntary program and the number of hires
reported by participating businesses. As of Decesber 31 # 1977@
parti.cipatiag employers reported hiring about 20#000 Veterans
and 1,200 non-veterans und-er the voluntary &ctAty. the
Alliance had received pledges for approalsately 65. 00 jobs for
the voluntary activity and had a goal of 100, 000 pledges and
