Current interoperability initiatives are atteipting to overcome the results of the present nonstandardization. Achieving standardization for &A long term, however, will require identification and resolution of significant economic .,ud political problems. ._!eommendations: In fiscal year 1979, the conqrez,; should require the military services sad subsequent budqet hearings to poin out, vhen they propose a new procurement or Justiiy an existing program, to what extent the weapons system is i.ntekperable with those of %ur NATO allies and how the interoperab lity can bo increased.
