Allegations were made of inappropriate and inadequate
medical treatment an# cire of ars. Yvcnne Stafford, Michelle
Barnes, and Hanuel Ab fl1 by the staff-of Elmendorf Air. -orce
Hospital in Alaska. Te-edical advisor concluded that frs.
Stafford was one of asmall number of persons who develop liver
damage resulting in l1Ver necrosis and subsequent death.
Reqardless of the caie--e received, 's. Stafford would-have
died as there is curriitly no means availatle to treat -liver
necrosis. However, tb.-a tending physician was incorrec't in
prescribing a high protein diet and certain drugs
contraindicate. in liver disease treatment. at least eight
different drugs were dispensed to sichelle Barnes daring an
18-day period. The g1rl was given too n'y drugs, and- she was
treated twice in the oupatient department without parental
permission although shil was not in need of emergency care.- Hr.
kbille was admitted to-tbe hospital for--ei cession and 5 days
later committed suicide. The hospital is not designed and
sti-fed to provide proper care for suicidal patients, and Abille
should have been referred elsewhere. A random sample of patient
records indicated that patients at the hospital generaliy
receive appropriate treatment and that the medical staff's
qualifications are excellant. However- sone of the staff
physicians are also .-n'ed in outside employment. IBS)-.
