          Lessons concerning logistics and maintenance problems
 arising from the purchase of the British-built Harrier aircraft
 system can be applieL to future procurevents o-- weapons systemF.
 Findings/Conclusions: Naintenance and logistics suport prr -eRos
 resulted from inadequate and untimely planning and a lack oL
 experience in puchasing weapons systems frow othe- ccuntries.
 The Navy could not obtain necessary technical data from the
 United Kindgom and could not establish a system to ren~ir the
 aiicraft. Supply support in the United Kingdom was hindered by:
 competition for available spare parts, British venwors not
 meeting delivery schedules, and poor turn-arCUL4 time for items
 repaired by British venders. Recommeudations: it purchasing
 foreign weapons systems, the Secretary of Defens,- should
 promptly make logistic support anclyses and develop maintenance
 plars to support the system, provide for a ccntra ;tor to support
 the system until the military seLrvice can, and rcqcire that
 supplemental guidelines be is*.ed for integrated 'Logistics
