Why NASA's Property Accountin
And Control System
Should Be Improved
This report describes how major deficiencies
in the operation of NASA's property account-
ing system have weakened the agency's
managemeni control over equipment valued
at millions of dollars and, in some cases, have
resulted in the purchase of equipment identi-
cal to idle items already on hand.
Many of the deficiencies cited in this report
could have been prevented if NASA had re-
sponded effectively to findings and recom-
mendations included in previous GAO and
NASA internal audit reports. Actions being
taken to improve NASA's equipment manage-
ment and accounting systems are cited in the
report.
