Nuclear Regulatory Commissiol.
   and Other Federal Agencies

The Nuclear Re!uiatory Commission is the
lead Federal agency in assisting States to vol-
untarily develop plans to cope wich emer-
gency radiation incidents at nuclear facilities,
particularly powerptants, and accidents
involving transportation of radioactive mate-
rial&.

This interagenzy effort has resulted in pub-
lisihed guidelines and free formal training
courss for State and local government offi-
ciaK responsible for radiation emergency
response planning. As of December 1975,
however, the Commision did not consider
any State plan adequate to support the radia-
tion emergency response planning guidelines
deveioped by the Commission.

GAO offers recommendations by vhich
States can improve their radtation emergency
response plans and keep the Congress better
informed,
