handle is hein.death/abodp0001 and id is 1 raw text is:

God helping me, I will never sign the death warrant of any man so
     long as I live.
                             -ABRAHAM LINCOLN.

     ABOLISH THE

DEATH PENALTY

            JOHN QUINCY ADAMS
(in a letter to the Massachusetts Society for the Abolition of Capital
                 Punishment in 1846)

I do therefore heartily wish and pray
for the success of your efforts to pro-
mote the abolition of capital punish-
ment; and if you can shape the laws of
the land to a disclaimer of the right of
Government itself to take from any hu-
man being the life granted him by his
Creator, I would welcome it as the har-
binger of a brighter day, when no in-
dividual of the race of man shall ever
lose his life by the act of another.

              OF THE DEATH PENALTY
