Constitution of the Kingdom of Burundi
(16 October 1962)
MWAMBUTSA IV
King of the Barundi
To all those present and to some, Salutations.
Atinrming our belief in God and in the pre-eminent dignity of
the human person;
Having determined to guarantee the fundamental rights of man;
Seeking way of promoting the unity of the Murundi people and
the economic, social and cultural advancement of each of the inhabi-
tance of Burundi under a truly democratic regime;
Being inspired by the universal declaration of the rights of man
and the Charter of the United Nations;
The National Assembly has adopted and we hereby sanction the
provisions that follow:
SECTION I
The territory and its divisions
liricle 1.-Burundi is a Kingdom divided into eight provinces,
namely: Bubanza, Bujumbura, Bururi, Gitega, Muramvya, Muyinga,
Ngazi Ruyigi.
The Kingdom may by law be divided into a larger number of
provines.
4rticle 2.-Sub-divisions of a province may only be established
by law.
4rticle 3.-The boundaries of the Kingdom, provinces, distric
And communities shall only be changed or corrected by law.
