Mr. Hoover was elected a Vice-President of this Academy in the
spring of 1921, very shortly after his appointment as Secretary of
Commerce. He continued to serve in that capacity throughout his
term as President, 1929-1933, and until his death, in 1964. He was
the second Vice-President of this Academy to become President of the
United States; Woodrow Wilson held such a post from 1895 to 1905.
Mr. Hoover was an engineer, a public administrator, a humanitarian, a
world traveler, a philosopher on the subject of leisure, a financier, a
biographer, an educator, a bibliophile, and an uncompromising advocate
of economic and political individualism. His highly diversified achieve-
ments are collectively a testimony to his active belief in a society of
responsible freedom and opportunity.
