Lewis M. Stevens, a member of the Board of Directors and General
Counsel of this Academy, died in a Philadelphia hospital 15 July 1963,
in his sixty-sixth year.
Mr. Stevens was born in Meriden, Connecticut, and graduated from
Princeton University and the Harvard Law School. In 1926 he became
a partner in the law firm of Stradley, Ronon, Stevens, and Young, where
he maintained an affiliation until his death. He was also active in po-
litical and civic affairs, serving as a member and Secretary of the Phila-
delphia Charter Commission, chairman of the Finance Committee of the
City Council, chairman of Pennsylvania Volunteers for Stevenson, co-
founder of the Greater Philadelphia Movement, and Secretary of High-
ways of Pennsylvania. He was a director or chairman of the Samuel S.
Fels Fund, the Associated Hospital Service, the World Affairs Council,
the Presbyterian Hospital, Lincoln University, the West Philadelphia Cor-
poration, and the Whyte-Williams Foundation. He served a term as
Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. He was a soldier
in World War I and a civilian leader of several war activities in World
War II.
Mr. Stevens served with distinction as an officer of this Academy and
was most diligent in his attention to Academy affairs.
