This volume contains the papers presented at the Fifty-first Annual Meeting held in Philadelphia on April 18 and 19, 1947. There were present not only hundreds of members of The Academy but other hundreds of specially appointed delegates from institutions and organizations in all parts of the world. These meetings are regularly devoted to a discussion of world affairs. Since public attention is now centered on the United Nations, the general topic chosen for the two days was Progress and Prospects of the United Nations.
