FOUR years ago the American Academy devoted its November issue to Chil-
dren in a Depression Decade. In that volume the effort was made to ascertain
how the depression had affected the problems and programs of child welfare.
Today finds many of these children passing through the trying stage of ado-
lescence, in the midst of a war of world-wide dimensions. What is happening to
them-in society, in home, at work, in recreation? The present volume seeks to
consider these questions through the eyes of a group of men and women viewing
the situation from their respective interests and vantage points.
During the last World War, little heed was given to the fact that children were
as much a part of a war world as were the soldiers at the front. Yet, the rise in
juvenile delinquency then, and the subsequent peacetime flapper and gangster
generation, proved that war had left its mark on the adolescents of that era.
At the outbreak of a second World War, experts in the field of child welfare
were ready to profit by those past experiences. This time the child has received
the attention he deserves from them; first, as a person living now in a muddled
world; second, as a person to be developed, during this era, into a constructive
peacetime citizen. This volume is at once an evidence of, and, it is hoped, a
contribution to, such recognition.
