handle is hein.cow/anamacp0168 and id is 1 raw text is: FOREWORD

THIS issue of THE ANNALS includes the papers presented at the
Thirty-seventh Annual Meeting of the Academy, held at the Bellevue-
Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia on April 7 and 8, 1933. With only a
few minor modifications, the program was prepared by the American
Council of the Institute of Pacific Relations, whose assistance was
freely given and is deeply appreciated by the officers and members of
the Academy.
There have been added to the papers presented at this meeting two
other articles, one by Dr. Ching-Chun Wang entitled Manchuria at
the Crossroads, and the other by Dr. Russell M. Story entitled
Some Observations on the Situation in China.
The volume also contains a number of papers which have been
presented at meetings of the Pacific Southwest Academy, which is a
center of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, with
its headquarters at Los Angeles, California. The American Academy
is particularly glad to include these valuable contributions which evi-
dence so clearly the important work being done by the Pacific South-
west Academy and the great significance of the issues which are
being discussed from its platform.
Each year the Academy is under obligation to a large number of
friends whose generosity helps make possible the Annual Meeting.
Our sense of gratitude is this year particularly keen because there are
so many demands upon the generosity of public-spirited citizens. We
are anxious at this time to record our appreciation to these many
friends whose interest in our work is so continuous and so well
sustained.
