REPORT

The Committee on Natural Resources, to whom was referred the
bill (H.R. 3058) to redesignate the Jefferson National Expansion
Memorial in the State of Missouri as the Gateway Arch National
Park, having considered the same, report favorably thereon with-
out amendment and recommend that the bill do pass.
PURPOSE OF THE BILL
The purpose of H.R. 3058 is to redesignate the Jefferson National
Expansion Memorial in the State of Missouri as the Gateway Arch
National Park.
BACKGROUND AND NEED FOR LEGISLATION
The Jefferson National Expansion Memorial was created in 1935
as a unit of the National Park Service (NPS), and today contains
a museum, the old St. Louis Courthouse, and most notably, the
Gateway Arch National Monument. Built to commemorate Thomas
Jefferson and the settlers who drove America's westward expan-
sion, the Gateway Arch National Monument is the largest man-
made monument in the country and has been welcoming visitors to
the banks of the Mississippi River since 1965. Clad entirely in
stainless steel, the 630-foot monument houses a set of unique
trams, which transports thousands of visitors a day to an observa-
tion platform at the apex of the Arch.
H.R. 3058 redesignates the Jefferson National Expansion Memo-
rial as Gateway Arch National Park and states that any references
in law, map, regulations, documents, paper or other records of the
