Tis elegantly printed volume should find a place in the library of every man
interested in the politics of the country. It is a very valuable addition to our po-
litical history. Mr. Wheeler is eminently fitted for the work he has undertaken,
and seems to have accomplished it with entire success.- Washington Union.
The boldness of Mr. Wheeler's undertaking, his known and, indeed, unusual
competency to it, and the importance of such a book, if well executed, not only
to the future historian, but the present politician of our country, and of all others
which the study of our affairs can enlighten, left us no choice but attentively to
peruse this volume. As with individuals, so with parties, the book seems to us as
resolutely fair as any man could well be who had an opinion of his own; and how
should any body be capable of writing on such subjects who is inert enough not
to have any opinion as between parties? Its general character is earnest, lucid,
and business-like. We foresee that his Biography of Measures will make the most
valuable part of his work, and will become, not merely the general guide to our
congressional history, but itself a leading authority, which must be In the hands
and at the finger-ends of all who engage in our political discussions.-National
Intelligencer.
Its style is easy and flowing, and its literary merits are very considerable. Mr.
Wheeler has entered upon the extensive work, of which this is the first volume,
with zeal, and a determination to make it permanently and eminently valuable.
-Courier and Enquirer.
Interwoven with the Biographical Sketches are valuable historical notices of
the proceedings of Congress.-Hunt's Merchant's Magazine.
The book is mainly valuable as being a complete history of the times. Mr.
Wheeler has long been a reporter of the proceedings of Congress, and beyond
being skillful and accomplished in his profession, he has been a careful observer
of men, and of the public questions of which he speaks. He has written impar-
tially, and relied mainly upon facts, in order that the reader might draw his own
conclusions of the public questions of the time. We can vouch for the general
justice of his conclusions, and the accuracy of his statements, very many of them
having passed under our own observation. We commend it to all public men, to
all political readers, and to every library.-Pittsburgh Gazette.
Indeed, in the whole sketch of myself, I see nothing of which I can complain.
Some of my warm admirers would say you had not done me full justice; while
others, not at all so, would say you had been over partial to me. But the truth
is, you did not write to suit the expectations of either the one or the other class.
Your object was to write an impartial history; and I am free to say, so far as I
can judge, that you have succeeded in it. Indeed, it could not well have been
otherwise. With talents admirably suited for the task, with the best opportuni-
ties for exercising them, and without prejudices of any sort to gratify, success was
expected by your friends, and I am rejoiced to believe that they have not been
disappointed.-Extract of a Letter from Hon. T. H. Bayly, of Virginia.
It is a highly interesting work, and, so far as our examination of the lives of our
personal acquaintance comprised in the collection goes, it is very accurate. It
should find a place in public and private libraries on account of the great mass of
minmute and personal, as well as political history which it contains, and which
can not be found in any other publication.-Scott's Weekly Paper.
This is an admirable and very important work; its aim being not only to ren-
der familiar to the public the history of those who bold in trust the destinies of
the land, but also to present, in a condensed and popular form, the leading events
and enactments that from time to time have become portions of the history of our
republic. Mr. Wheeler seems to have executed his difficult task with great skill
and candor, and we can not doubt but that his labors will be very widely appre-
ciated.-Journal of Commerce.
