To provide the Congress with a comprehensive review of its work, the Congressional Budget
Office publishes quarterly reports, like this one, highlighting recent work and summarizing work
in progress.1

Recent Work
Over the past three months, CBO has provided a variety of budget and economic analyses,
fulfilling the agency's core mission of supporting the Congress during each stage of the
legislative process. The agency has published 43 cost estimates for legislation that was reported
by a committee or that was the subject of a motion to be placed on the consensus calendar. CBO
was also focused intensely on providing analysis of legislative proposals as the Congress was
considering the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (Public Law 117-2). In addition, since its last
quarterly report on work in progress, CBO has released 25 reports, working papers, testimonies,
and interactive tools; they satisfied statutory requirements, fulfilled Congressional requests, or
provided economic and budgetary analysis or technical information (see Table 1 on page 5).

A number of those publications provided analysis of the economic and budgetary situation. CBO
typically releases its economic and budget projections together. But this winter, it decided to
release a summary of its economic projections first-in An Overview of the Economic Outlook:
2021 to 2031-to assist lawmakers as they continued to address the consequences of the 2020-
2021 coronavirus pandemic. Then CBO published its projections of federal deficits, debt,
revenues, and spending for the next decade in The Budget and Economic Outlook: 2021 to 2031.
It later provided additional information about the economic and budget projections in subsequent
publications. The agency also explained its budget projections for the next 30 years in The 2021
Long-Term Budget Outlook. Each month, CBO issued its Monthly Budget Review, an analysis of
federal spending and revenues for the previous month and the fiscal year to date. CBO also
published three interactive tools: one that showed how different projections of revenues and
outlays would alter projections of net interest costs, deficits, and debt; one that simulated the
agency's process for projecting discretionary budget authority and outlays; and another to explore
how increases in the federal minimum wage would affect earnings, employment, family income,
and poverty. Finally, CBO provided answers to questions for the record following an October
2020 hearing about its budget projections.

Some of the publications responded to Congressional requests: an analysis of the costs of
developing, purchasing, and operating cruise missile defense systems; a report describing how the
prices of brand-name prescription drugs are determined in different federal programs and
