H.R. 1248 would add roughly 30 miles of river segments along the York River in Maine to
the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. The bill also would authorize the National Park
Service (NPS) to enter into cooperative agreements with state and local governments to
protect and preserve those river segments.

Using information from the NPS on the typical costs of managing wild and scenic rivers,
CBO estimates that implementing H.R. 1248 would cost $200,000 annually and $1 million
over the 2021-2025 period; such spending would be subject to the availability of
appropriated funds.

The CBO staff contact for this estimate is Janani Shankaran. The estimate was reviewed by
H. Samuel Papenfuss, Deputy Director of Budget Analysis.
