The bill would increase the cap for those positions from $160,100 to $197,300, as set by the executive schedule for 2020. Under current law, most of those staff, who also are physicians, dentists, and registered nurses, are exempt from the lower salary cap and earn salaries above $160,100. Using information from VA, CBO estimates that the bill would increase the salaries of 7 people, who are currently subject to the lower salary cap, by 23 percent, from an average salary of $150,700 to $185,700 in 2020. After adjusting for inflation, CBO estimates that implementing the bill would cost $1 million over the 2020-2025 period; that spending would be subject to the availability of appropriated funds.
