What   Is a Race Riot?
  Everyone knows what  a race riot is! It is a dreadful clash in
a slum area between gangs of most terrible people.
  This description satisfies many nice people. It even makes
them feel smug. But it does not describe what a race riot is. It
leaves out of the picture the chief participants in a race riot. It
leaves out the nice people, the people who make riots possible.
  A  race riot is like a child's headache, and it is also like an
Atlantic iceberg.
  When   little Marilyn says, Mommie, my head hurts awful,
Mother  is worried. She wants to do something about it. But she
doesn't turn to some old household remedy. She may ease the
pain temporarily with a cold towel or a simple sedative, but she
