The partner Quirk is a good specimen of a mere lawyer with professional shrewdness and a positive ignorance of men and manners out of his profession. The principal character, Titmouse, grows the more contemptible the more he is elevated, and he is intended as a sketch from life of what are termed the ' scrub aristocracy;' he presents a rich contrast to the Asibreys, whose Christianity and gentle virtues shine out under every vicissitude, and tamp them with the seal of a nobility higher than man creates.-Inquirer.
