SELECTION
OF
LEADING CASES
ON
THE HINDU LAW OF INHERITANCE,
BY
THE HON'BLE JOHN BRUCE NORTON,
OF LINCOLN'S INN, BARRISTER AT LAW,
ADVOCATE GENERAL OF MADRAS,
AND
MEMBER OF THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
PART I.
The reason of the Law is the life of the Law : for though a man can tell the law, if he know
not the reason thereof, he shall soon forget his superficial knowledge, But when he fiudeth the
right reason of the law, and so bringeth it to his natural reason, that he comprehendeth it as his own
this will not only serve him for the understanding of that particular case, but of many others: for
'cognitio legis est copulata et complicita': and this knowledge will long remain with him.
Tunc ununquodque scire dicimur, cum primam causam scire putamus. Scire autem est proprih
rem ratione et per causam cognoscere.
LD, COKE UPoN LITT. SECT. 283.
