                     RELATING TO TUE SALE OF
 WINES AND SPIRITOUS LIQUORS IN CONNECTICUT,
                  IN FORCE A. D. 1812,
   TOGETHER WITH ALL SUBSEQUENT ACTS RELATING THERETO.


   An Act for the due regulation of licensed and the suppression of unlicensed honses was
 passed in October, 1703. It was afterwards perceived that the provisions of that Act
 were meffectiml for the attainment of its object, and in October, 1719, another Act was
 passed, contaming the substance of the provWons in the text. [Note by the committee
 appointed to prepare and pubbsh the edition of Statutes m 1808.]
 An Act for licensing and regulating Houses of public Entertain-
    ment, or Taverns ; and for suppressing unlicensed Houses.
    SEc. 1. Be it enacted by the Governor and Council and House of
-Representatives in General Court assembled, That the civil author-
ity, selectmen, constables, and grand-jurymen, in the respective
towns in this state, shall, some time in the month of January, annu-
ally, convene together and nominate the person or persons whom
they, or the major part of them think fit and suitable to keep an
house or houses of public entertainment in the said town, for the
ensuing year: and if any of the persons so nominated shall die, or
refuse or neglect to take out license, or be denied license by the
county court, or shall remove from the place where he dwelt when
nominated, or shall be legally suspended; or in case the authority
and other officers shall judge it to be of public convenience and
necessity to add to the number nominated in January; in either of
said cases they. may convene on proper notice, and nominate any
suitable person or persons, for the purpose aforesaid, at any time
within the year: which nomination shall be sent by them to the
next county court in that county, certified under !he hands of a
majority of the civil authority, and of the selectmen in such town;
which court shall grant licenses to such persons nominated, or to so
many of them as said court shall judge to be suitable and neces-
sary to keep houses of public entertainment, and to no others;
which licenses granted to the persons nominated in January, shall
be in force for one year, and no more; and the licenses granted to -,
the persons afterwards nominated shall expire at the same time as
those granted to the persons nominated in January: and the said
