MORAL CHARACTER.

In a few weeks the enlightened freemen of Pennsylvania will be called upon to vote
for a citizen to fill the high office of PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED SPATES.
This being the most elevated political position known among the civilized nations of the
Earth, the incumbent should ever be a man of the most unblemished morals. As the
character of a people is uniformly reflected by the conduct of their rulers, it would be
a crying sin to raise a man to the first office in the Uni' . whose life has been tarnish-
ed by acts of gross moral turpitude.
The Democratic arty have presented to the public con.ideration, JAMES K. POLK
of Tennessee. His name has been before the public for a period of nearly six months,
and his moral character, has passed through the ordeal unscathed. Despite the un-
bounded political virulence of his enemies, they have not DARED to assail his moral
integrity. ANDREW JACKSON, the venerable sage of the Hermitage, says in a
public letter, dated July 12, 1844: I HAVE KNOWN JAMES K. POLK SINCE
*HE WAS A BOY. A CITIZEN MORE EXEMPLARY IN HIS MQRAL
,-DEPORTMENT, MORE PUNCTUAL AND EXACT IN HIS BUSINESS,
MORE ENERGETIC AND MANLY IN THE EXPRESSION OF HIS
'OPINIONS, I HAVE NEVER KNOWN. This strong testimony of the Old
Hero is corroborated by every one, with whom Gov. Polk has ever had any intercourse.
John Banks, late Federal candidate for Governor of this State, has said the same thing,
and the National Intelligencer, the great central Whig organ at Washington. has said:
,,Of Mr. Polk. in his private relations, WE CANNOT SPEAK OTHERWISE
THAN WITH ENTIRE RESPECT.
The Federal Bank party have nominated HENRY CLAY of Kentucky, whose
private character presents a mournful contrast to that we have just described. For the
information of reflecting and well-disposed citizens, we here republish some of the
testimony heretofore adduced on this subject. The first relates to

MR. CLAY'S GAMBLING.
Here is the testimony of Robert Wickliffe, a distinguished citizen of Kentucky,
once a candidate for the high office of Governor, who testifies that he saw Mr. Clay
PLAY CARDS FOR MONEY, as recently as 4th of July, 1843. It happened pube,
licly, on board a steamboat. The testimony is corroborated, also, by other witneaw&;
