FEDERAL AND STATE COURTS.
THE subject of the conflicting jurisdiction of the
Federal and State Courts is becoming every day one
of greater interest. It has, like nearly every other
political question, begun to be entangled in that com-
mon source of strife and sectional bitterness, that has
so long threatened and disturbed the peace and welfare
of the country, and which, unlike the occasions of
former difference between the State and Federal au-
thorities, is not likely to be a temporary cause of con-
test between them. Nor, it is to be feared, are the
respective partizans of either jurisdiction likely to
bring to its consideration that temperate and calm
judgment, which may secure a just and safe determ-
ination of the controversy. And any other determin-
ation must be attended with such serious consequences,
and so full of danger to the common weal; moreover
the public feeling has already been so far enlisted on
one side or the other of the question, that it has
become a matter of duty, as well as of interest, for
