And Its American Parallels
House of Commons' Investigation and Report of the
Beauharnois Power Development on the
St. Lawrence River in Quebec
By JUDSON KING
Director National Popular Government League
From the HOUSE DEBATE, July 31, 1931.
Sir, the fundamental criticism I have to urge against the
conduct of this enterprise is that from its very inception, it
defied Government.--Premier Bennett, Conservative.
All my knowledge of that concern has come since this
inquiry-and has come as a great and sad surprise. . . .
Mr. Sweezey had curious notions as to how progress was to
be made by industrial enterpri'ses through the exercise of
political influence.-Opposition Leader, Mr. Mackenzie King,
Liberal.
If corporations are going to finance elections, then wealthy
people are going to control lawmaking. . . . If capitaliza-
tion costs were kept down, we would be far on the way to
higher levels of business morality.-Mr. Montgomery, Win-
nipeg, Farmer-Labor.
