Council votes

on proposed

rule changes

  At a meetin t on June 18, the
Virginia State BAr Council voted to
propose  changes in the Supreme
Court Rules on Mandatory Conti-
nuing Legal Educati'm.
  Under   those  changes,  the
deadline for annually certifying at-
tendance would beJuly 31 instead
of June 30 and associate members
would be required to certify atten-
dance at eight hours of CLE before
returning to active status.
  The Counci  also approved pro-
posed changes to Court Rules on
the method  for electing Council
members.  Council members   are
currently elkcted at a business
meeting oif the Circuit Bar. Under
the  changes, Council members
could  he  elected at the same
business meeting or by mail ballot,
depending on the choice of the at-
turneys in each circuit. According
to a report given by the chairman
of the Special Committee to Study
Election Methods,  Raymond   J.
Diaz, the Council will he asked to
consider changes in the methods
for electing the VSB President-elect
at the Council meeting in October.
  In other business, the Council:
  - voted to seek a Supreme Court
Rule which would  require atten-
dance at a two-day special seminar
on professionalism for all newly-
admitted attorneys. The seminar

was elected president-elect of the
Virginia State Bar (VS) during the
State Bar's 49th Annual Meeting in
Virginia Beach. June 18-20.
  Corson defeated Staunton lawyer
Colin j. S. Thomas, Jr. In the annual
election, conducted by  written
ballot at the Cavalier Oceanfront
Hotel on June 19-20. The election
results were announced at the con-
clusion of the Annual Meeting.
