The site for the Mansion was set aside by the Missouri, legislature in 1822, the same year the City of Jefferson was being carved out of'the wilderness. The first building was finsihed in 1826, and hosed both the legislature and the gov- ernor's quarters. In 1834, a second stucture was built for the exclusive use of the governor and his family, and in-1871 at the urging of the governor and his family, and in 1871 at the urging of Governor B. Gratz Brown, a new mansion comparable to the state's growth and importance was constructed at a cost of $50,000.00. (Photo by Jack F. Allen.)
