Alan Bean to speak at
A lan Bean, a former NASA astronaut and
the fourth man to walk on the moon,
will speak at the Quality of Life seminar dur-
ing the 2004 Bar Convention, scheduled for
January 22-25 at Charleston Place.
Bean was selected as a NASA astronaut in
1963. During his 18-year career, he became
the Lunar Module Pilot on the Apollo 12 mis-
sion and commander of the Skylab Mission II,
which lasted 59 days and traveled 24.4 mil-
lion miles. His crew accomplished 150 per-
cent of their pre-mission goals, a record
unequaled even today.
While at NASA, Bean helped establish
11 world records in space and astro-
nautics. His numerous awards
include two NASA Distinguished
Service Medals and two Navy
Distinguished Service Medals.
During his presentation, Bean
will share 50-60 slides with the
audience. He says, I want
them to feel they are

hearts and minds of -7 1 -7

as a team, took risks, extended the envelope
and made an impossible dream a reality, hop-
ing this insight will inspire them to realize
they can accomplish equally challenging goals
in their lives as well.
Also during the Convention, the Thursday
evening President's Welcome Reception will be
held among four downtown Charleston art gal-
leries including the Charleston Renais-sance
Gallery. The galleries are within walking dis-
tance, and guests will be free to rotate among
each party. Jack Swerling will lead the Criminal
Law Update again this year, and Jim Gray and
Mike Kelly will lead the Civil Law Update, last
year's new addition to the Convention. These
seminars, as well as the Family Law semi-
nar, will be attended by South Carolina's
family and circuit court judges. Mark
your calendars for January 22-25, and
