L. Jonathan Ross Installed as 1985-86
President of New Hampshire Bar Association

L. Jonathan Ross of the Wiggin and Nourie
law firm in Manchester was installed as
president of the New Hampshire Bar Associ.
ation on June 22 at the close of the Bar's
1985 Annual Meeting in Dixville Notch, New
Hampshire. Immediate Past President Walter
L. Mitchell, of Nighswander, Martin, Kidder
and Mitchell, Laconia, presented Ross with
the traditional gavel at a dinner recognizing
outgoing president Mitchell for his past year's
service and honoring the incoming president,
new officers and board members.
A   1967  graduate of the Georgetown
University Law Center, Ross has long been

active in Bar Association affairs. He chaired
the Bar's Finance Committee from 1984-85
and served as chair of the Committee on
Cooperation with the Department of Labor
from 1982-84. He has also been a member of
the Bar's Legislation Committee and the
Committee on Cooperation With the Courts.
Prior to Ross's election as vice-president in
1983, he served five years on the Bar's board
of governors. Ross served as the Bar's presi-
dent-electafrpi ,J.,I8_L85 _until his recent

President's Award for Distinguished Service
In recognition of his service to the state's
legal profession and his outstanding leadership
in the delivery of legal services to the poor,
New Hampshire Legal Assistance Executive
Director Robert D. Gross, Goffstown, was
awadedtheNew Hampshire Bar Association
President's Award for Distinguished Service at
the Bar's Annual Meeting, June 21, at the
Balsams.                                                   
Also taking this opportunity to honor                  -
Gross, the New Hampshire House and Senate
commended him for his efforts on behalf of
New Hampshire's disadvantaged citizens in a
joint House/Senate Resolution.  Donna P.
Sytek, Chair of the House Judiciary Commit-
tee, and Richard E. Boyer, Chair of the Senate
Judiciary Committee, presented Gross with

Charles G. Douglas, III, Resigns Over Pay

Charles G. Douglas, III, announced his
resignation from the New Hampshire Supreme
Court on June 25, citing lack of adequate
judicial pay as the primary reason for his
decision.   The complete text of Judge
Douglas's resignation letter follows.
It has been an honor and a pleasure to
serve my state as a trial judge and appellate
judge for over a decade. It is, however, time
to move back into the private practice of law.
I am resigning effective August 16 and will

become a full partner in the firm    of
McSwiney, Jones and Semple, in Concord,
which will now be called MeSwiney, Jones,
Semple and Douglas. Three of us were at
Boston University School of Law at the same
time, and I look forward to practicing with
such a distinguished group of attorneys. I
will, of course, miss my colleagues and the
staff at the Supreme Court.
I will be returning to,a profession that
