Dennis Carlson named Counsel for Discipline

Dennis G. Carlson, former deputy
Lancaster County public defender,
has been appointed to succeed Stan
Gushard as the NSBA's Counsel for
Discipline. The appointment was ef-
fective February 1.
Carlson, 32, is a native of Lincoln
and a 1974 graduate of the Univer-
sity of Nebraska College of Law. He
has served as deputy public
defender since July 1974 and is a
member of the National College of
Criminal Defense Lawyers.
As Counsel for Discipline,
Carlson will be responsible for in-
vestigating complaints against
Nebraska attorneys and, where ap-
propriate, referring disciplinary
matters to local Committees on In-
quiry for further investigation. The
Counsel for Discipline's office
receives an average of 46 inquiries
per month, of which about eight
per month are classified as com-
plaints requiring further investiga-
tion.
In his first newsletter column, on
page 14, Dennis indicates that a
number of changes will be forth-

coming in the disciplinary office, in-
cluding a greater emphasis on the
education of attorneys and layper-
sons concerning professional
ethics. Changes in the Rules of the

Supreme Court, with regard to
discipline, will also be instituted in
the very near future. Those
changes will be fully outlined in the
next issue of the newsletter.
