the North Carolina State Bar
January 15, 1960
The regular quarterly meeting of the
Council was held on Friday, January 15,
1960, with the President, Armistead J.
Maupin, presiding. The following officers
and Councilors were present:

The President called the meeting to
order and introduced Mr. R. A. Hedriek
of Statesville, new Councilor elected to
succeed Mr. Don A. Walser of Lexington,
from the 22nd District.
Recent deaths of several former Coun-
cilors were reported as follows, and the
President asked for memorials to be pre-
pared for presentation at the next meet-
ing of the Council:
James B. James, Greenville; W. B. R.
Guion, New Bern; . R. Williams, Dunn.
The President also asked for memorial
to be prepared and presented for late
J-dge L. R. Varser, former Chairman of
Tae Board of Law Examiners.
Mr. Grimes, on behalf of the Executive
Committee, reported to the Council that
it had read the minutes of the October,
1959 meeting and found the same to be in
order and recommended that the same be
approved and adopted by the Council.
The recommendation of the Committee
was adopted. The Executive Committee
further reported that it had examined
the financial statement for the quarter

Council Elects Board Member

ZEB VANCE NORMAN
The Council of The North Carolina
State Bar, at its regular quarterly
meeting on January 15, 1960, unani-
mously elected Mr. Zeb Vance Norman,
Plymouth, North Carolina, to succeed to
the unexpired term of the late Judge
L. R. Varser, Lumberton, North Caro-
lina, as a member of the Board of Law
Examiners. Mr. Norman is a former
Councilor and President of the North
Carolina State Bar.
ending December 31, 1959 and found the
same to be in order. That due to the un-
usually heavy work load of several of the
committees it recommended that the Pre-
sident be authorized to appoint former
members of the Council to serve in an
advisory capacity to certain committees
in specific instances where, in the opin-
ion of the President, it would be neces-
sary or helpful, or would lighten the
work load of said committee. The Com-
mittee recommended that any contribu-
tions made to the State Bar be deposited
in a special savings account, and to be
expended only by vote of the Council;
such funds to be used for the purpose
designated by the donor, otherwise, at
the discretion of the Council, for un-
authorized practice or some other partic-
ular need. The recommendations of the
committee were duly adopted by the
Council.
The President called to the attention of
the Council the fact that one of the dis-
