Message From President
McElwee
In the last issue of The North Caro-
lina Bar, i called the attention of the
profession to the necessity of under-
taking some steps toward eliminating
the unauthorized practice of law, as a
matter of public as well as professional
interest, and the limitation upon our
present staff in not only trying to cover
this field but other matters which need-
ed attention of the organized bar.
The proposals for judicial redistrict-
ing have now been adopted calling for
30 judicial districts, and this necessitates
increase in membership of your State
Bar Council to coincide with the new
judicial districts. The problems of the
Board of Law Examiners and the neces-
sity to provide for the increased cost
which would automatically occur by vir-
tue of the redistricting have been given
consideration by your Council and all
of the above matters have been taken
into consideration in the proposals of
the Council for legislation, the substance
of the same being set forth elsewhere
in this issue.
It is my sincere hope and that of the
entire Council that you lend your sup-
port to its recommendations and pro-
gram which we are sure will result in
great benefit to the public and the pro-
fession.
Ethics Committee To Consider
All Matters Pertaining
To Canon G
At the January meeting of the Coun-
cil, there was considerable discussion in
connection with Canon G and the opin-
ions of the committee under the Canon
and following extended discussion and
hearing from several members of the
Bar, all matters pertaining to Canon
G were referred to the Ethics Com-
mittee for consideration and all opin-
ions rendered or requests for opinions be
likewise referred to the committee for
full discussion and consideration at or
prior to the April meeting of the Coun-
cil. Any requests for opinions between
the January meeting and the April meet-
ing will be held by the committee for
full consideration.
Error And Apology
In the last issue of The North Caro-
lina Bar, the hnme of Mr. Theodore F.
Cummings of Hickory was omitted from
the list of members of the Bar in the
1955 General Asembly. We sincerely
regret this error.
