one all by itself. Switching to
newspaper web press printing
is expected to save the State
Bar as much as $20,000 a year.
The decision wasn't made
lightly because the qu4lty
book style Lawyer has been
tradition since the State Bar
was founded. For more than a
year, however, the Lawyer edi-

board, and the State l3ar Ex-

have been weighing the pros

more way to cut operational
costs. The pros won.
The decision means The

Law Library launches pro bono clinic
to help low-income, pro se clients

Sally K. Hilander, Editor
The Montana Lawyer
Not so long ago, most State
Law Library users were attorneys
researching cases to better repre-
sent clients. Today, however, a
growing number of the users are
non-attorneys hoping to learn how
to represent themselves. And a
new library clinic promises to help
them do just that.
The unmistakable shift in State
Law Library clientele became evi-
dent about five years ago in Hel-
ena and mirrors a national trend
toward pro se representation by

people who can't afford attorneys
or don't trust them to do the best
job. The media has popularized
the law so much - everything
from The People's Court to L.A. Law
to police shows -- they think they
can do it themselves, Librarian
Judy Meadows commented.
Some of them have been repre-
sented by counsel before and,
rightly or wrongly, they feel they
haven't been represented well.
In short, many of the pro se
clients are frustrated and angry
with a civil justice system that
doesn't seem to care about them.
