STATE bAR HOLDS FIRST

ANNUAL MEETING

Approximately 380 people at-
tended the first annual convention
of the State Bar of Montana at Big
Sky June 20 - 21. The meeting also
served a dual role in wrapping up
the affairs of the Montana Bar
Association, which as a voluntary
association served the Montana
Lawyer since 1885. Presiding during
the majority of functions was
Douglas R. Drysdale, the eighty-fifth
and last president of the Montana
Bar Association.
Participants in the Continuing
Legal Education portion of the
meeting were Bradley E. Dougdale,
Havre, in Law Office Management;
Sheila Birnbaum, New York City,
Products Liability; Jerome Shulkin,
Seattle, The Bankruptcy Act; and
John M. Dietrich, Billings, Farm and
Ranch Business Estate Planning.
Honored guests at the Annual
Business luncheon were C. W.
Leaphart, Sr. former dean of the
University of Montana Law School
and Max Baucus, Congressman
from Montana.
During the well attended busin-
ess session, members voted upon
and approved changes in the State
Bar's By-Laws which had been
mailed in advance of the meeting.
The changes revised the member-
ship fee schedule as follows: Five
years after admission $100; two -
three and four years after admission
$60.00; first year after admission
$40.00; inactive members $40.00,
Judicial members, no fee.

Fifty Year Awards were present-
ed by Douglas R. Drysdale to
Theodore Jacobs, Missoula; Benja-
min Harwood, Billings and Seth
Bohart, Bozeman.
At the Annual Banquet, service
awards were presented to Bjarne
Johnson, Great Falls for his
outstanding efforts on the Uniform
Probate Code, and to Douglas R.
Drysdale for his service as President
of the Montana Bar Association,
1974 - 1975. The dates for next
year's convention will be July 29, 30
and 31 at the Outlaw Inn in
Kalispell.
